REGISTERED GI
Registered Geographical Indication (GI)
A Registered Geographical Indication (GI) is a geographical name or sign used on products that originate from a specific region and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that place of origin. Once registered, the GI receives legal protection and can only be used by authorized producers from that geographical area.
In India, GI protection is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 and registrations are granted by the Geographical Indications Registry.
Key Features of a Registered GI
Legal Protection: Prevents unauthorized use of the geographical name by producers outside the designated region.
Exclusive Use: Only authorized users from the registered geographical area can use the GI for their products.
Quality Assurance: Ensures that the product maintains the characteristics and standards associated with its origin.
Market Recognition: Enhances the product’s reputation and value in domestic and international markets.
